Jacky went first.

‘I’m sorry. This is all my fault,’ she said.

‘None of this is your fault,’ said Tom. ‘Forget about it.’

‘No,’ said Jacky. ‘I can’t forget about it. Listen. I’ve got a plan.’

Tom looked at her. There was only one day until the Battle of the Bands.

‘It’s too late but I’m listening,’ he said.

‘What if we mash up your song?’ said Jacky. ‘I’ll add some classical music. It’ll be great.’

‘Maybe …’ said Tom. ‘But what about the new girl?’

‘Don’t worry. I’ll talk to her. She’ll understand,’ said Jacky. ‘I want to come back, if you’ll let me.’

‘Let you?’ said Tom. ‘I’d LOVE you to come back. It’s our only chance!’

‘Great,’ said Jacky. ‘We can practise at lunchtime. OK?’ ‘Great,’ agreed Tom. At the end of the day, a boy with spiky red hair tap-danced past Tom and Jacky.

‘The notice has gone up,’ he said. ‘You’re playing first.’

‘Who was that?’ asked Jacky. ‘I thought I knew everyone in this school.’

Tom shrugged. ‘Don’t know. Don’t care. But look at this. He’s right. Chasing Trouble is playing first.’
